The story of Dynamite Foothills Character Area
How the area came to be.
The City Council adopted the Dynamite Foothills Character Area Plan in March 2000 (Resolution No. 5492) with a companion implementation program. Its goals are to preserve the existing rural desert character, balance development with the environment and promote open space.
The plan keeps existing densities of mostly two to three acre lots, favors native streetscapes, ribbon curbs, minimal street lighting and trails instead of sidewalks, and discourages gated communities. Much of the area has since been acquired for the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, including the former Brown's Ranch lands around Granite Mountain.
