The story of Carefree Town Center
How the area came to be.
K.T. Palmer and Tom Darlington, who met at a Phoenix Kiwanis luncheon in 1946, began buying land in 1955 and formed the Carefree Development Corporation in 1956; homebuilding started in 1958. The whimsical street names (Easy Street, Ho Hum Road, Lazy Lane) came from a 1958 dinner party.
The Carefree Sundial was completed in 1959 at the heart of the town center and donated to the town in 1976; the plaza is named K.T. Palmer Sundial Circle. Carefree incorporated in 1984, partly to avoid annexation by Scottsdale.
