The story of the Historic Old Town District

How the area came to be.

This is the original town site on land Winfield Scott bought in 1888. The city plan says it embodies Scottsdale's legacy as 'the West's Most Western Town' and, although not a formally designated historic district, has one of the city's highest concentrations of individually designated historic buildings.

Register properties include the 1909 Scottsdale Grammar School (Little Red Schoolhouse, National Register 1994, now the Scottsdale Historical Museum), the 1921 Farmer's State Bank building (now the Rusty Spur), the 1929 first post office, the 1933 Our Lady of Perpetual Help Mission Church (National Register 2018) and the 1950 Sugar Bowl building. The Old Adobe Mission was built in 1933 from adobe blocks made on site.
