The story of the Country Club Park Historic District

How the area came to be.

Part of an 1888 homestead patent by Charles H. Orme, the land was bought by Aetna Investment Corporation from the DuPont family in 1939, which platted Country Club Park with 196 lots around a 2.5 acre elliptical park and opened it in October 1939. Contractor Bert Wilkinson and Alfred Knight's Eureka Investment Company finished it during World War II, with Lescher and Mahoney designing the wartime houses.

The National Register cites it for FHA influence on local development and wartime construction changes (period 1939 to 1945). The Phoenix Country Club lies to the north.

Before you buy

Properties inside a City of Phoenix HP overlay district need Historic Preservation review (a Certificate of Appropriateness) for most exterior work, new construction and demolition; interior work is generally not reviewed. Confirm the specific parcel is inside the HP overlay and whether it is contributing. Phoenix requires short term rental permits under its own ordinance; state law limits how far cities can restrict STRs. Older homes: check for original electrical, cast iron or clay sewer laterals, and irrigation rights (SRP flood irrigation is common in central Phoenix historic neighborhoods). All of this is address specific.
