The story of the Central Avenue Corridor
How the area came to be.
Downtown's monopoly on high-rise buildings ended when Del Webb built Phoenix Towers on North Central Ave in 1957, and Central Ave north of downtown became the Valley's office and social spine in the 1960s. Zoning changes in the 1980s let high-rises spread beyond the Central core, and the Deck Park Tunnel was completed in 1990 (Phoenix Magazine). Landmarks along it include the Heard Museum, Phoenix Towers, Regency on Central and the Westward Ho.
