The story of CityNorth
How the area came to be.
CityNorth was planned in the mid 2000s by the Thomas J. Klutznick Company, with Related Companies co developing the first phase, as the commercial core of Desert Ridge. A $97.4 million Phoenix sales tax incentive tied to its parking garages led to the Goldwater Institute's Turken v. Gordon lawsuit; the Arizona Supreme Court ruled in January 2010 and the agreement stood.
Phase one, High Street, opened in November 2008, and the recession halted the rest. In January 2019 Crown Realty and Development won the remaining 96.5 acres and Desert Ridge master developer rights out of bankruptcy and began infrastructure work that year, with the land zoned for about 2,500 homes plus offices and hotels.
