The story of Mummy Mountain
How the area came to be.
Mummy Mountain rises to about 2,260 ft and was earlier called Windy Gulch and Horseshoe Mountain. Miner and businessman Charles Mieg bought most of it in the 1940s and marketed lots under the new name, chosen because its profile looks like a reclining Egyptian mummy. Camelback Inn, opened December 15, 1936 by Jack Stewart with backing and land from John C. Lincoln, sits on its south slope and was acquired by Marriott in 1968.
Paradise Valley Country Club, organized at a 1952 meeting of about 50 businessmen at Camelback Inn, opened April 10, 1954 on its west side. The Mummy Mountain Preserve Trust was formed in 1997 to protect about 320 acres along the ridge and held about 218 acres by August 1999. It is the only part of the Phoenix Mountains not within the Phoenix Mountain Preserve.
