The story of the Phoenix Homesteads Historic District

How the area came to be.

Phoenix Homesteads was a Depression era federal subsistence homestead project. The Division of Subsistence Homesteads bought the 80 acre tract in 1934, and the work passed to the Resettlement Administration and later the Farm Security Administration. The first phase, designed by Robert T. Evans, was finished in 1935 with adobe Pueblo Revival homes on lots of about three quarters of an acre meant for gardens, small animals and fruit trees; a second phase designed by Vernon De Mars followed in 1937.

About 45 of the original 60 homes remain. Residents incorporated the Phoenix Homesteads Association in 1936. The district was listed on the National Register on October 13, 1987, with a boundary increase in 2010, and the City of Phoenix designated it in January 1990.
