The story of Camelback East Village

How the area came to be.

Phoenix is divided into 15 urban villages, each with a Village Planning Committee appointed by the City Council to advise the Planning Commission. The Phoenix General Plan for 1985 to 2000 identified 24th St and Camelback Rd as the village's primary core; the city lists a second core at 44th St and Van Buren St. Much of the village's housing was built between 1950 and 1970, and some older neighborhoods keep flood-irrigated lots on former citrus groves. Thomas Mall at Thomas Rd and 40th St, opened in 1963 as Phoenix's second indoor mall, closed in 1988 and was razed in 1993.
