The story of the Camelback Corridor
How the area came to be.
Camelback Rd's Biltmore stretch shifted from orange groves and ranch land to a suburban retail and office center after Biltmore Fashion Park opened in 1963. The Phoenix General Plan for 1985 to 2000 named the 24th St and Camelback area a primary core of Camelback East Village, and the Camelback East Primary Core Specific Plan was adopted May 29, 1991 (updated 2006 after a referendum challenge and mediation). By 1990 the core held about 4.3 million square feet of office and 2.6 million square feet of retail space.
