The story of Biltmore

How the area came to be.

The district grew around the Arizona Biltmore Hotel, which opened February 23, 1929 (architect of record Albert Chase McArthur, with Frank Lloyd Wright consulting on the textile block system). It was the centerpiece of a 600-acre project on former citrus orchard: about 200 acres for the hotel and golf course and 400 acres subdivided for housing, including the Biltmore Estates (SAH Archipedia).

William Wrigley Jr. took over the hotel after the 1929 crash and built his mansion, La Colina Solana, on a hill overlooking it in 1931. Biltmore Fashion Park opened at 24th St and Camelback Rd in 1963 on 31 acres, and the Phoenix General Plan for 1985 to 2000 designated the 24th St and Camelback area as the Camelback East Village primary core, which turned the corridor into a major office district.
