The story of Papago Park
How the area came to be.
The land was part of an 1879 reservation for the Pima and Maricopa tribes and became Papago Saguaro National Monument in 1914, a status Congress revoked on April 7, 1930. Hunt's Tomb, for Governor George W. P. Hunt's wife, was built in 1931, and a bass hatchery commissioned by Hunt followed in 1932. Camp Papago Park, a World War II prisoner of war camp, opened in 1943 and was deactivated in 1946; on December 23, 1944 it was the site of the Great Papago Escape, when 25 German prisoners tunneled out.
The state sold its portion to Phoenix on February 25, 1959, and the Phoenix Zoo opened on the old hatchery grounds in 1962. Tempe voters later made the Tempe portion a charter protected preserve (Proposition 402).
