The story of Southern Scottsdale
How the area came to be.
Southern Scottsdale holds some of the city's oldest neighborhoods, developed from the late 1950s through the early 1980s, much of it primarily single-story ranch homes. At plan adoption in 2010 it held about 30 percent of Scottsdale's population, and most of its housing and commercial buildings were 30 or more years old.
Los Arcos Mall opened at Scottsdale and McDowell roads in 1969, closed in 1999 and was redeveloped by the ASU Foundation as SkySong, whose first office buildings opened in 2008. Several mid-century subdivisions are now on the Scottsdale Historic Register, including Town and Country Scottsdale and Village Grove 1-6 (both designated in 2005).

Before you buy
Older housing stock means renovation and permit history matter. Parts lie near the Indian Bend Wash floodway, so check flood zones by address. The Indian Bend Wash Superfund groundwater site (North site about 8 square miles in Scottsdale, listed 1983) underlies part of the area; it concerns groundwater, not homes, and is cleaned by pump and treat. Scottsdale licenses short-term rentals under a city ordinance and state law limits outright bans; check current city rules before buying for rental use. Address specific.
