The story of Scottsdale Waterfront and Southbridge

How the area came to be.

The Arizona Canal was built from 1883 to May 1885 under William J. Murphy. Scottsdale's Waterfront project followed a 2003 development agreement; by December 2006 its first phase of about 225,000 square feet of retail, office and restaurant space was open and two 13-story residential towers of about 100 condos each were due in spring 2007.

Architect Paolo Soleri designed the Soleri Bridge over the canal, whose pylons mark solar events. In December 2019 the City Council approved Southbridge II, roughly 10 acres on the canal's south bank carrying forward plans of developer Fred Unger, whose earlier Canals of Scottsdale plan voters had rejected about 20 years before.
