The story of Pinnacle Peak
How the area came to be.
The peak was used by the Hohokam for hunting and gathering and later by settlers for ranching and mining. The land around it was Arizona State Trust Land until the 1980s, when Scottsdale annexed the area (the city added almost 80 square miles between 1981 and 1984) and a 185 acre park site was set aside.
In 1994, 35 acres were sold to a housing developer in exchange for funding and building the park's main trail; the park was closed for about six years during that work, reopened April 20, 2002, and is about 150 acres today. Pinnacle Peak Patio, which started in 1957 as a small store selling beer and bait and grew into a well known cowboy steakhouse on Jomax Rd, was the area's best known landmark until it closed on June 28, 2015.
