Hiking near Paradise Valley: Camelback, Piestewa Peak, and the trailheads close to home

Your vision, your home, our expertise.

The two summit trails on Camelback Mountain are both rated Extremely Difficult by the City of Phoenix, and its main lot at Echo Canyon typically fills by late morning on winter weekdays and stays full all day on weekends. If you are shopping for a home in or around Paradise Valley because you want trails nearby, those two facts matter as much as the view. Here is what the official trail pages say about the trailheads closest to Paradise Valley, and how that connects to the homes around them.

The short answer The closest major trailheads to Paradise Valley are Echo Canyon and Cholla on Camelback Mountain, both open sunrise to sunset and both rated Extremely Difficult, and the Piestewa Peak trailheads in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, open 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. For gentler options, the city lists Bobby's Rock Trail at Echo Canyon and the Piestewa Peak Nature Trail. Parking is limited at both Camelback trailheads, and several summit trails close from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Extreme Heat Warning days.

Camelback Mountain: two trailheads, two different experiences

Camelback Mountain sits at the south edge of Paradise Valley, with homes on its slopes in both the Town of Paradise Valley and the City of Phoenix. Our page on Camelback Mountain Foothills homes for sale covers the homes between McDonald Drive and Camelback Road, from 44th Street east to Invergordon Road and 64th Street. Maricopa County Assessor records pulled November 3, 2026 count about 1,363 homes there, with a median single family lot of 35,300 square feet and a median recorded sale price of $3,300,000 since November 2024 across 139 sales. See where the foothills sit on our Northeast Valley map.

Echo Canyon Trailhead

Echo Canyon is on the west side of the mountain at McDonald Drive, just north of Arcadia homes for sale and inside the homes for sale in 85018 ZIP code. The city describes the trail as incredibly steep and very rocky, with handrails in places and sections where hiking gives way to climbing near the top. It also notes that capable hikers regularly underestimate it and need help from rescue crews.

Parking is the other story. The city says the lot is typically full from late morning through early afternoon on winter and spring weekdays and full all day on weekends. When it fills, the gate closes, and drivers cannot idle on McDonald Drive or Tatum Boulevard waiting for it to reopen. Police ticket idling vehicles and tow illegally parked ones.

Cholla Trailhead

Cholla starts on the east end of the mountain off Invergordon Road. On the Paradise Valley side of the mountain, our Mountain Shadows homes for sale page covers homes and resort residences below Camelback Mountain. The city calls it a slightly longer alternative to Echo Canyon, still Extremely Difficult, with a well defined lower section and a steep, boulder strewn upper third. There is a small rest area in the saddle before the boulder section, and the city suggests that is where tired hikers should turn around.

There are no designated parking spots. Hikers parallel park in marked sections on the west side of Invergordon Road and walk a gravel path along Cholla Lane. Yellow curb areas are set aside for ride share drop offs.

Piestewa Peak and the Phoenix Mountains Preserve

West of Paradise Valley, the Phoenix Mountains Preserve offers a wider range of trails and longer hours. The city lists trailhead hours of 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Mesquite (302), 304, 32nd Street, 40th Street, Dreamy Draw, and Myrtle Tunnel trailheads. The Piestewa Peak Summit Trail is the famous climb, but there are gentler choices:

  • Piestewa Peak Nature Trail: a 1.4 mile loop with 180 feet of elevation change from the 304 Trailhead at 7200 N. Piestewa Peak Dr., rated Moderate.
  • L.V. Yates Trail: 2.5 miles with 220 feet of elevation change from the 40th Street Trailhead at 9200 N. 40th St., with water, restrooms, and a shade ramada listed at the trailhead. That trailhead is in the area covered by our homes for sale in 85028 page.
  • Dreamy Draw Nature Trail: a 1.5 mile loop with 180 feet of elevation change from the Dreamy Draw Recreation Area at 2421 E. Northern Ave.

South of the Piestewa Peak trailheads, our homes for sale in 85016 page covers the ZIP code that includes the Biltmore area. One more note from the city: North Mountain Park will close from December 2026 through early 2028 for renovations, while other preserve trailheads, including the North Mountain Visitor Center, stay open.

A flat option to the east: the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt

Not every outing needs a summit. The City of Scottsdale describes the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt as 11 miles of parks, lakes, paths, and golf courses through the heart of Scottsdale, with more than 24 grade separated crossings so walkers and cyclists can avoid major cross traffic. It runs through central and south Scottsdale, including the homes for sale in 85251 ZIP code.

What it means if you are buying near a trailhead

Living close to Camelback or the preserve is a real lifestyle feature, and it comes with practical trade offs. Trailhead traffic, street parking rules, and weekend crowds are part of daily life on some streets. On the hillside lots themselves, Paradise Valley and Phoenix each have hillside development rules that affect what you can build or remodel.

Prices vary widely by street. Our Paradise Valley homes for sale page shows 414 sales in the 12 months ending November 4, 2026 at a median of $3,812,500, while the Mountain Shadows area page shows 13 sales at a median of $2,500,000 in the 12 months ending October 31, 2026, and the Arcadia page shows 395 sales at a median of $1,600,000 in the 12 months ending November 1, 2026 (all ARMLS via Flexmls). Those are different areas, sizes, and home types, so treat them as context, not a trail premium. For the full ZIP code view, see homes for sale in 85253.

Practical steps

  • Visit at trail time. Drive the street on a winter or spring Saturday morning, when the city says Echo Canyon parking is in highest demand.
  • Check the parking signs. Note where street parking is allowed near the home and where it is not, especially near Invergordon Road and McDonald Drive.
  • Verify the jurisdiction. Phoenix and Paradise Valley lots sit side by side around Camelback, and rules for permits, hillside building, and services differ.
  • Match the trail to your routine. If you want a daily walk, a moderate preserve trail or the greenbelt may fit better than a summit climb.
  • Sign up for heat alerts. The city offers Extreme Heat Warning notifications on its Trail Heat Safety Program page.

Avoid this mistake: assuming a home near Camelback means an easy daily hike. Both summit trails are rated Extremely Difficult, dogs are not allowed on any Camelback trail, and the summit trails can close from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on extreme heat days. Walk the trail and the street before you pay for proximity.

The honest caveats

Trail distances and elevation changes come from the City of Phoenix trail pages; the city lists a single distance for its out and back summit trails, so check whether a figure is one way before you plan. The city's pages also disagree on facilities at Cholla: the trailhead page says there is no potable water or restroom, while the trail description lists a bathroom and drinking fountain, so plan as if there are none. Rules, hours, and closures change, so confirm on the official page the day you go. The home figures above come from two different sources, county deed records and the MLS, over different periods, and they are not directly comparable. Nothing here shows that trail access by itself raises or lowers a home's value.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Echo Canyon Trail on Camelback Mountain?

The City of Phoenix lists the Echo Canyon Trail at 1.14 miles with an elevation change of 1,400 feet, and rates it Extremely Difficult. It is an out and back trail with handrails in steep sections, very little shade, and rock scrambling near the 2,704 foot summit.

What are the hours for the Camelback Mountain trails?

The City of Phoenix lists Camelback Mountain hours as sunrise to sunset for both the Echo Canyon and Cholla trailheads. On days when the National Weather Service issues an Extreme Heat Warning, the Echo Canyon and Cholla trails are restricted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where do you park for the Cholla Trail?

There are no designated parking spots at the Cholla Trailhead, which the city lists at 5150 N Invergordon Rd. Hikers must parallel park in designated sections along the west side of Invergordon Road and walk a gravel path along Cholla Lane to the trail. Vehicles parked against posted signs are towed at the owner's expense.

Are dogs allowed on Camelback Mountain?

No. The City of Phoenix prohibits dogs on all Camelback Mountain trails year round. If you want to hike with a dog nearby, check the rules for the specific Phoenix Mountains Preserve trail before you go.

Is there an easier hike at Camelback Mountain?

Yes. Bobby's Rock Trail, which starts off the Echo Canyon Trail, is rated Easy by the city. It loops about two tenths of a mile around a large sandstone rock with about 200 feet of elevation gain and views toward Paradise Valley and the Phoenix Mountains Preserve.

What are the hours for the Piestewa Peak trails?

The City of Phoenix lists trailhead hours of 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. and trail hours of 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. for the Piestewa Peak and Dreamy Draw trailheads. The Piestewa Peak Summit Trail and associated trails are restricted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Extreme Heat Warning days.

How hard is the Piestewa Peak Summit Trail?

The city rates the Piestewa Peak Summit Trail Extremely Difficult, at 1.2 miles with 1,200 feet of elevation change. It starts from the Mesquite Trailhead at 2701 E. Piestewa Peak Dr., where the city lists water, parking, and restrooms. The Piestewa Peak Nature Trail, at 1.4 miles and 180 feet, is a gentler option from the 304 Trailhead.

Do Phoenix trails close in extreme heat?

Some do. Under the City of Phoenix Trail Heat Safety Program, Echo Canyon, Cholla, the Piestewa Peak Summit Trail and associated trails, and several South Mountain trails are restricted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. when the National Weather Service issues an Extreme Heat Warning. The city reports 45 days of trail closures between May 1 and October 13, 2024.

Is Camelback Mountain in Phoenix or Paradise Valley?

The Camelback Mountain trails are managed by the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department. The Echo Canyon Trailhead address is in Phoenix 85018, while the Cholla Trailhead address is listed as Scottsdale, AZ 85253. Homes around the mountain sit in both Phoenix and the Town of Paradise Valley, so verify the jurisdiction for any specific address.

What should I check before buying a home near a trailhead?

Drive the street on a winter weekend morning to see trailhead parking and traffic, since the city says Echo Canyon parking typically fills on winter and spring weekends. Ask about street parking rules near the home, and on steep lots check the hillside rules that apply in Phoenix or Paradise Valley. A local advisor can pull recent sales on the same street so you are comparing like for like.

The bottom line

Paradise Valley sits between two of the Valley's best known trail systems, but the closest ones are demanding and busy. Know the difficulty ratings, the parking rules, and the heat closures before you buy for the trail, and compare homes street by street rather than by distance to a trailhead alone.
