The story of Camelback Mountain Foothills

How the area came to be.

Building on the mountain's sides began after World War II; Phoenix New Times dates the first home on its slopes to 1947, north of Camelback Rd near 56th St. Concern over homes climbing higher led the county in 1956 to declare nothing should be built above 1,600 ft, a limit that was not enforceable, and then to the Goldwater led preservation campaign of the 1960s. In 1970 Phoenix bought 91 acres of a 129 acre Echo Canyon parcel, and the developer kept the rest just west of the future trailhead parking for higher density housing; the Echo Canyon subdivision there was built mainly in the 1970s and early 1980s.

The Phoenician resort and its residential neighborhoods occupy the south slope within Phoenix city limits. On the north face in Paradise Valley, the Paradise Valley Racquet Club opened in 1957, became John Gardiner's Tennis Ranch in 1970 and reopened as Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain in 2001.
