The story of Greater Airpark
How the area came to be.
The area grew around Scottsdale Airport, which began as Thunderbird Field No. 2 in 1942 and was bought by the city in 1966 and opened as Scottsdale Airport in 1967. A 1981 Scottsdale Airport Area Plan guided it until the 2001 General Plan, whose Airpark and Sonoran Regional Core character areas covered it.
Outreach for a combined plan began in 2008 and the City Council adopted the Greater Airpark Character Area Plan in October 2010. TPC Scottsdale's Stadium Course opened in December 1986 and has hosted the Phoenix Open since 1987, and WestWorld was dedicated in 1987 as Horseman's Park.
