The story of Sunnyslope
How the area came to be.
Sunnyslope grew as a health seekers' settlement north of early Phoenix. Elizabeth Beatty arrived in 1918 and later rented low cost cabins on Ruth Street (built in the 1930s and 1940s) to families suffering from tuberculosis. The Desert Mission was founded in 1927 to serve residents' medical and social needs, and its hospital was renamed for benefactor John C. Lincoln in 1954; it is today HonorHealth John C. Lincoln Medical Center.
The Sunnyslope Presbyterian Church was founded in 1927, and the Sage, Sunnyslope's first newspaper, operated from a 1935 building. Sunnyslope High School opened in 1953, and its students painted the 'S' on Sunnyslope Mountain in December 1954. The City of Phoenix annexed Sunnyslope in 1959.
